Frances E. Swailes, age 93 of Lapeer, died Friday, August 9, 2002 at Lapeer Regional Hospital. Frances was born on August 8, 1909 in Burnside Township to D. and Gussie (Hunt) Delos. Before Frances moved to the Lapeer area, Frances and husband, Bert Swailes resided in Oxford, Ohio for 20 years. He preceded  her in death in 1995.

Before retiring Frances was a professor at Eastern Michigan University. Frances received numerous awards from the college for teaching Occupational Therapy. She was a member of the North Branch Order of Eastern Star #149, A.A.U.W. and several Occupational Therapy organizations. She enjoyed gardening, letter writing, was an avid reader, and she also enjoyed sewing and quilting before her illness in 1995.

She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Beth Swailes of Oxford, Ohio, grandchildren, Kristy, Kimberly, Brett, Gary, Kevin and Scott, sisters; Drusille Redmond of Oxford, Michigan, and Bonnie (husband, Clinton) McCallum of Lapeer.

She was preceded in death by husband, Marshall Herrick, and husband Bert Swailes, sister, Eva Smith and brother, Kenneth McIntosh.

Memorials may be made to the Eastern Michigan University or the North Branch United Methodist Church.

The family will be present for visitation on Sunday, August 11, 2002 from 2 to 7, Monday, August 12, 2002 from 10 to 11. The funeral will be 11:00 AM, Monday, August 12, 2002 at Blackburn Chapel-Martin Funeral Home with the Rev. Wayne Ferrigan officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, North Branch.
